Although you want the best for your hair, in some cases, despite your best intentions, you could do more harm than good. For sure you have some habits that are damaging your hair, it’s just that you don’t know about them.
1. Shampoo every day
The scalp produces some natural oils that should get to the ends of the hair for it to look its best. This is why the professionals say that you shouldn’t shampoo the hair every day. It is enough to use shampoo every other day or every third day. If you feel a need for refreshing, just spritz the hair with some water and blow dry it to have a different style.
2. Combing wet hair
Although in some cases the hairstylists comb the wet hair, keep in mind that hair is more sensitive when it is wet, so in case you comb it, it could lead to breaking or hair loss. If you would like to straighten your hair after washing it, it is a far better solution to finger comb it. You can proceed to combing the hair after it is dry. If it is a must to comb the wet hair, make sure that you use a wide toothed comb.
3. Wrapping your hair too tight in a towel to dry it
In case of some hairstyles it is recommended that you towel dry the hair. In this case you have to make sure that you don’t wrap the towel too tight around the hair and also ensure that you don’t rub too hard because the hair could break. Don’t forget that just as in the previous case, the hair is weak when it is wet, so you have to make sure that you protect it against stress.
4. Same ponytail in the very same spot over and over again
In many cases women choose the same hairstyle for a longer period of time. If you have your ponytail in the same spot, the hair could get caught and it could break. This is why it is a good idea to change the spot of fastening by one inch every day. You could decrease the damage even more if you opt for the seamless elastic bands. Nonetheless even in this case you should alternate the location of the ponytail.
5. Keeping your hair tied up while you are sleeping
Most probably you know that hair growth is faster while you are sleeping. When you sleep with your hair tied together, it prevents the hair from growing, and thus you could reduce the beauty of the hair. Also in case you are sleeping with your hair tied during the night could support the appearance of tangles when you wake up. This will make styling your hair even more difficult.
6. Ignoring the dandruff issue
If you are affected by dandruff, using pomade and oil is only a temporary solution. You should know that dandruff is actually an inflammatory scalp problem and it has nothing to do with the dryness of the scalp. In order to treat it, you should be using a shampoo that comes with zinc, salicylic acid, tar, or selenium sulfide to make it possible for you to get rid of the flakes.
7. Over brushing your hair
In order to style the hair and to spread the natural oils from the roots to the ends all there is need for is a few strokes. In case you are brushing your hair, you just give it unnecessary friction and you could speed up the breakage process. This is why you should forget about the myth that there is need for 100 strokes for the hair to be healthy and shiny. In this case, your hair needs less ‘care’.
8. Blow dry very wet hair
In case you are blow drying your hair while it is still very wet you will make it more difficult to style it, not to mention that this way the level of heat damage is a lot higher. You should blow dry the damp hair, not wet hair, and the styling shouldn’t last longer than 20 minutes. Before blow drying, you should wrap your hair in a towel for 5 minutes, and then let it air dry for the same amount of time.
9. Ignoring scalp issues
To make sure that you will have healthy hair, you have to make sure that you nourish your scalp. One of the best things that you could do is to massage the scalp with your fingertips. This way the blood flow will increase. In case you would like to offer some extra care, you could also be using a leave-in treatment.
10. Wrong hair brush
You may know that if you are using the wrong brush, you will ruin your hairstyle. Nonetheless there is also a bigger threat: damaging your hair. Generally speaking, the longer your hair is, the bigger the diameter of the brush should be. If you are looking for volume, you need a round brush, while a paddle brush works the best if you would like to have smooth hair. It is no wonder that there are so many different sizes and shapes.
